Star Trek fans know Lenard as the character Sarek, father of the Vulcan Mr. Spock (portrayed by Leonard Nimoy) in the Star Trek and Star Trek: The Next Generation television series and movies. But Lenard was also an accomplished stage actor who performed in productions of plays by Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Ibsen. He worked in Off-Broadway productions before making his Broadway debut in Carson McCuller's Square Root of Wonderful in 1957.He also appeared with John Gielgud in Much Ado about Nothing and had lead roles in Country Scandal, Little Eyolf, and Rosmersholm. Lenard had roles in thefilms The Greatest Story Ever Told and Annie Hall. On television, he appeared in The Power and the Glory with Laurence Olivier and in the series MissionImpossible and Gunsmoke. Lenard was a favorite at Star Trek conventions and often expressed pride in his portrayal of Sarek and his part of the Star Trekstory.
