James Cagney Biography (1899-1986)



Full name, James Francis Cagney, Jr.; born July 17, 1899, in New York, NY; died of a circulatory ailment in Stanfordville, NY, March 30, 1986; son of James (a bartender and saloon owner) and Carolyn (Nelson) Cagney; married FrancesWillard "Willie" Vernon (an actress, singer, and dancer), 1922; children: (adopted) James Jr. (died, 1984), Cathleen.

From his obituary in The New York Times, CTFT learned that after his retirement in 1961, James Cagney enjoyed his upstate New York farm where he raised Morgan horses, wrote verse, became a successful farmer, sailed, painted, and played classical guitar. "Absorption in things other than self," he observed, "is the secret of a happy life."
