Bibi Besch Biography (1940-1996)



Born February 1, 1940, in Vienna, Austria; died of cancer, September 7, 1996,in Los Angeles, CA. Actress. Television was the medium in which Besch spentmost of her career, but she also appeared in several films, most notably in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Steel Magnolias, Betsy's Wedding, and The Promise. After coming to the United States as a child and studying acting, Beschmade her living on television and appeared on numerous shows during the 1970s, including the Six Million Dollar Man, Charlie's Angels, The Rockford Files, and The Edge of Night. Two of her most recent television appearances--in the 1992 movie Doing Time on Maple Drive and in the series Northern Exposure in1993--earned her Emmy Award nominations. Besch also appeared on the television series E.R., Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, and Coach. Besch was active in theScreen Actors Guild, serving as its director from 1990 until the time her death. With the Guild, Besch worked to improve benefits for actors and expand roles for women.
